    Bah.
    Long time since updating.

Not much has changed. Novices still idiots.

    Bah.

    So what?
One little brush with the law, and everybody's got to make a big deal.

    Bah.
Love. Bah. It seems like everybody's getting married these days.

Good thing I can see such things coming, and avoid them.

    Idiot flower-sniffer.
Today I was doing some of my interminable paperwork when a novice came up to me and cleared his throat expectantly. I glanced up, and he was beaming widely, holding a bunch of half-wilted daisies.

"Guildleader Kssarh? I just wanted to say thank you for all you've done. I bet nobody stops and says 'thank you' but I'm saying it now!"

He held out his arms expectantly. I moved toward him, planted my hands on his chest, and shoved him out the window. His flowers came floating down after him.

I don't have time for this nonsense. You want to thank me? Stop picking daisies. Turn your eyes upward. Work harder and learn faster.

    Idiot.

    Poker
With all the recent changes in postings, I've been wondering if we should invite some of our colleagues from further afield to join our poker nights. It would be nice to get to know new faces, and might give me a chance to win back a bit of coin. I don't know how Silvyrfrost does it.

    I'll get her next time.

    Cryptic.
My emissary has returned from the Arid Steppes bearing gifts from Guildleader Cherulisa.

One is a bottle of dusty earth, and one is a bottle of air. Either that, or my emissary spilled the contents of the second bottle and is claiming it's a bottle of air. How foolish of me to expect anything less than riddles from a fellow seer Guildleader.

Based on what I hear of conditions in the Spire, I should have sent a warm muffler to cut the drafts. Perhaps I'll send someone back to the Steppes.

    Interesting times
So, new routes to Forfedhdar have been found, and contact with the Nomads of the Arid Steppe has been reestablished. This is amazing news. Nonetheless, I still find myself troubled. Even with all that has been accomplished in the last few days, I cannot help but feel that the danger has not yet passed.

Would that I could get away myself to study the Spire and speak with my guild counterpart. Unfortunately, the parade of idiots to my door never ceases, and I cannot neglect my duties to the Observatory. I will have to send an emissary with my greetings, and a gift. I wonder what they would value.

    Interesting portents
Based on my observations of the heavens, I'm advising all guild members to seek the favor of the gods and brush up on their combat techniques.

I predict that the near future will be a dangerous time. I push my mages hard so they may rise to just such occasions. I pray they do not fail.

    Strange days.
Darius gone off on some mission he didn't see fit to tell me about, Dragon Priests running about, the world seems to be moving into chaos.

My visions are full of dust, water and rock, and unknown roads. Would that I could see where the roads lead.

    Bad luck.
Yesterday, Silvyrfrost casually mentioned that her counterpart to the south would be in town on business, and oh, by the way, it might be fun to get a poker game going. I agreed to come.

I should have been suspicious when I saw she was wearing that green gown, the one with the lace, but the ale flowed freely and it was good to get out of the Observatory. By the end of the night, my purse was considerably lighter. Funny how Macfrae tends to come north with an empty pack and leave loaded down with bottles - and coin.

A wise mage knows that there is fate, and then there is luck. Mine was sour tonight.

    I'll get them next time.

    Wonders never cease.
Some time ago, I thrashed some thugs who accosted me on my way to the Observatory. I didn't give it another thought, until tonight, when one came to me. I'll give him credit. He had bathed, and he seemed to be able to read the Guild register, albeit with much furrowing of the brow.

I glared and asked him why he was here, and the ruffian actually surprised me. He dropped a piece of straw on the ground, raised his hands, and began to mutter. The straw started to smoke, almost imperceptibly.

"I wanna do what you do," he said. "I've been watching the other mooni... the mages, and I can get it a little, but I need help."

I didn't answer, and he gulped and kept going. "I know we didn't get off right, but I'm not hanging with that crowd now. I can be better than that. I can work hard. If you show me what to do."

I let him fidget for a moment while I sized him up. He must have some intelligence just to have gotten to the third floor, assuming he didn't beat the secret out of some poor wretch. And he was able to watch and learn.

Never let it be said I'm not a generous man. I admitted him to the guild, showed him how to find the Wolf in the sky, and taught him a simple spell, Shadows.

I didn't particularly care for the gleam in his eye as he learned how to skulk more easily. I threw him out the window and yelled that he had one chance to straighten up. We'll see if he takes it.

    Idiot thugs.
As I was walking through the Middens today, I was set upon by a group of young toughs. I was well-dressed, so I suppose they thought me a good mark. When I swept the feet out from under the first, his purse spilled a few coppers upon the ground. The others were distracted, and I took the opportunity to telekinetically throw a few coins into their gaping mouths. As they flailed about trying to unstop their windpipes, the one on the ground stared at me. I've no idea what was in his mind.

My act was not without mercy. They had only to work together to save each other from choking. I didn't stay around to find out whether they did.

    Idiot former firestarter.
My courier arrived today with a welcome gift from the firebug's father - a hefty sack of gold, enough to cover the debt. A message for me indicated that his son has burnt things before, with a flint and steel! I wonder now if this spoiled, rich young man simply paid others to say that it was his Burn spell that set the bank afire, so that I would feel more kindly disposed toward him. A fool's hope indeed.

The courier also bore a sealed missive for the young man, which I volunteered to take to him. Our younger members may denigrate it sometimes, but I tell you that Piercing Gaze is often very useful in situations like this. The young man's father writes that his wayward son is to return home at once. Apparently he'll work off his debt mucking out his father's stable. The lad's face turned grey as ash when he broke the seal on the letter and read the lines, moving his lips silently. He slunk away without a word to me.

A season of honest work may teach him some humility and resopnsibility. Whether it does or not, good riddance.

    Still idiot firestarter.
A little research turned up an interesting fact. That fool of a mage who started a fire at the bank is apparently from a good family - with good money. I've dispatched a courier with a rider letting the young man's parents know of their son's actions. The guild may yet emerge from this unsinged, so to speak.

    Troubling.
Is it my imagination, or are the residents of the Middens getting more restless? I've been hearing of attacks from some of the more colorful and fragrant young men near the Keep. Perhaps I should warn the layabouts who slouch near the Observatory doorway.

No, they've spent too much time on their rumps and not enough on their toes. The laggards could use a slap in the face. Complacency does no one any good.

    Stupid plants.
Strolling outside the Observatory this morning, I noticed that the plants in one spot were in bad shape. It appears the greenery had been flattened by falling bodies.

I've summoned a gardener to discuss what might be done. It may be difficult to grow things there, since the ground is so compacted. We'll see.

    Poker Night.
Silvyrfrost invited Macfrae up to play.

I think they may have been passing signals somehow. Nobody's luck can be that good.

    I'll get them next time.

    Idiot firestarters.
I was unable to update yesterday due to an unexpected development.

Some idiot practicing his Burn spell outside the bank managed to set the night deposit slot on fire. The filled night deposit slot.

I didn't bail the fool out of jail, but I did tell the bank officials that the guild would make good on any missing or melted money. I'll have to ask Imaar for his help in calculating the loss. I'm not looking forward to the laughter that's sure to follow.

I spent a fair part of the night throwing bones and looking into the hearts and futures of the parties involved to be sure no one was going to try to swindle the guild.

That novice is going to pay, and I don't mean in silver.
